Servers are the engines of modern digital businesses, and their health directly affects the stability of services, user experience, and business profits. Judging the health status of a server is not as simple as checking the CPU level; it is a systematic process covering multiple dimensions such as performance, resources, security, and services. This article will provide you with a checklist for checking the health status of a server from beginner to expert.
1. First Impression: Basic Accessibility and Responsiveness
Before delving into the details, first confirm whether the server is "alive" and "responsive".
Network Connectivity (Ping):
Action: Use the ping command to test the network latency and packet loss rate to the server.
Good Status: Low latency (usually in milliseconds) and no packet loss. Occasional latency fluctuations are normal, but persistent high latency or packet loss may indicate network congestion or hardware issues.
2. Remote Connection (SSH/RDP):
Action: Attempt to log in to the server via SSH (Linux) or remote desktop (Windows).
Good Status: Able to establish a connection quickly and stably, with no lag during the login process.
3. Basic Service Response:
Action: Access the key services running on the server (such as websites, APIs, databases).
Good Status: The service responds quickly and returns the correct data and status code (such as HTTP 200).
If any of the above steps fail, it indicates a serious network or system-level failure, and immediate troubleshooting is required.
2. Core Vital Signs: Resource Utilization Check
Just as checking a person's heart rate and blood pressure, the four core resources of a server (CPU, memory, disk, network) are the core for judging its status.
1. CPU (Central Processing Unit)
Viewing Commands (Linux): top, htop, vmstat, mpstat
Key Indicators:
Utilization (%us+%sy): The sum of user and system CPU usage.
Load (LoadAverage): The average load over 1, 5, and 15 minutes. This is a more important indicator than CPU utilization.
Good Status:
The CPU utilization is mostly below 70% at most times, leaving room for handling sudden requests.
System Load Average: The average value over 1, 5, and 15 minutes. For example, 4-core CPU, the average load should be below 4 for good. If the load is consistently far above the number of cores, it indicates that processes are queued and the system is overloaded.
2. Memory (Memory)
Viewing Commands (Linux): free-h, top
Key Indicators:
Used/Available Memory.
Swap Usage.
Good Status:
There is sufficient available memory (Free) or cache (Cache/Buffer). Linux will use free memory for caching, which is a good thing, so don't be nervous if you see a high "used" value.
Swap Usage Rate is extremely low or 0. Once Swap is used, it means physical memory is insufficient, and performance will drop sharply due to disk I/O. Frequent reading and writing of Swap is a clear signal of insufficient memory.
3. Disk (Disk)
Viewing Commands (Linux): df-h, iostat, iotop
Key Indicators:
Space Usage Rate (Usage%).
I/O Utilization (%util) and Read/Write Wait Time (await).
Good Status:
Disk space usage rate is below 80%, leaving space for logs, temporary files, and new data.
The I/O utilization did not remain at 100%, and the read and write operations responded quickly (with a low await value).
4. Network (Network)
View commands (Linux): iftop, nethogs, sar -nDEV
Key indicators:
Inbound/outbound bandwidth.
Number of TCP connections, error packets, and packet loss rate.
Good status:
Bandwidth usage did not reach the physical limit.
TCP error packets and packet loss rates are extremely low. The number of connections is within the normal range, and there are no abnormal surges.
III. In-depth Diagnosis: System and Service-level Checks
The resources are normal, but it does not mean that the services are necessarily normal. Further deeper checks are required.
1. Key Processes and Services
Action: Check if the web server (Nginx/Apache), database (MySQL/PostgreSQL), application processes, etc. are running.
Commands (Linux): systemctl status <service_name>, psaux | grep <process_name>
Good status: All key services are in the active (running) state, and there are no abnormal restart records.
2. System Log Analysis
Action: View system logs and core service logs to look for errors (Error), warnings (Warning) information.
Commands (Linux): journalctl, tail-f/var/log/syslog, /var/log/messages or application log files.
Good status: The logs mainly contain normal information, and there are no large numbers of repeated error alerts.
3. Security and Intrusion Detection
Operation:
Check login logs: last, cat/var/log/auth.log|grep Failed (to view failed login attempts).
Check abnormal listening ports: netstat -tuln or ss -tuln.
Check suspicious processes and resource usage (such as unknown mining programs).
Good status: no brute-force cracking attempts from unauthorized IPs, no unknown port listening, and no suspicious processes.
IV. Advanced Perspective: Application Performance and Business Indicators
For operation and development personnel, it is also necessary to make a judgment from the application level.
Application performance monitoring (APM): Use specialized APM tools (such as SkyWalking, Pinpoint, NewRelic) to monitor the response time, throughput, error rate, etc. of the application.
Business indicators: Monitor key business-related indicators, such as order creation success rate, user login count, per-second query rate (QPS), etc. If server resources are good but business indicators decline, it may indicate problems with the application code or database queries.
