Analysis of the shelf life of electronic materials: Common types, influencing factors, and management points
In the field of electronic manufacturing, the shelf life of electronic materials not only affects product quality but is also closely related to cost control and production planning. Different types of electronic materials have varying shelf lives due to differences in material properties and storage conditions. Understanding the relevant knowledge of the shelf life of electronic materials is crucial for ensuring the stability, reliability of electronic products, and the efficient operation of enterprises. The following will provide a detailed introduction from the aspects of the shelf life classification of common electronic materials, influencing factors, and management measures.
I. Classification of shelf life for common electronic materials
(1) Passive components
1. Resistors, capacitors
◦ Ordinary surface mount resistors and capacitors: These components have high stability and typically have a shelf life of 3 - 5 years. For ceramic surface mount capacitors, the inorganic dielectric material is chemically stable and can maintain performance indicators for 5 years under sealed packaging. However, if the packaging is damaged, moisture in the air may invade, causing the insulation resistance of the capacitor to decrease and affecting its service life.
◦ Aluminum electrolytic capacitors: The shelf life of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is relatively short, usually 2 - 3 years. This is because the electrolyte in the capacitor will slowly evaporate over time, and after the electrolyte dries out, the capacity of the capacitor will decrease, and the equivalent series resistance will increase, leading to performance degradation. Even if not opened, after exceeding the shelf life, these capacitors need to be re-tested before use.
2. Inductors: The shelf life of inductors is usually 3 - 5 years. The main failure of inductors is due to the aging of the magnetic core material and the oxidation of the winding. However, in a dry and non-corrosive gas environment, their performance can remain stable for a long time.
(2) Active components
1. Integrated circuits (IC): The shelf life of IC products is generally 2 - 3 years. The semiconductor materials and packaging materials inside ICs are relatively stable under normal storage conditions, but long-term storage may cause oxidation of the pins, affecting the welding quality. Especially for some precise analog ICs or high-speed digital ICs, pin oxidation may cause abnormal signal transmission.
2. Transistors: The shelf life of transistors is similar to ICs, usually 2 - 3 years. Bipolar transistors and field-effect transistors are affected by environmental factors, and long-term exposure to high temperature and high humidity environments may cause increased leakage current and decreased amplification factor.
(3) Mechanical components
1. Connectors: The shelf life of connectors is typically 3 - 5 years. The metal contacts of connectors are key parts. If stored improperly, the contacts are prone to oxidation or corrosion, leading to increased contact resistance and decreased connection stability. Even within the shelf life, connectors exposed to high humidity or corrosive gas environments may fail prematurely.
2. Switches: The shelf life of switches is also around 3 - 5 years. The contacts and springs of mechanical switches age over time, affecting the conduction performance and service life of the switch; while electronic switches (such as MOSFET switches) do not have mechanical wear, they also face chip aging and pin oxidation issues.
(4) Other electronic materials
1. PCB boards: Ordinary rigid PCB boards (such as FR - 4) have a shelf life of 1 - 2 years. If the storage environment is humid, the boards are prone to moisture absorption, and during the soldering process, problems such as delamination and board explosion may occur. For high-frequency boards (such as PTFE), although its moisture resistance is good, long-term storage may also affect the dielectric properties.
2. Soldering materials: The shelf life of soldering wires, solder pastes, etc. varies greatly. Soldering wires in sealed packaging have a shelf life of 3 - 5 years; And solder paste, due to its presence of active ingredients such as flux, has a shorter shelf life. The unopened solder paste usually has a shelf life of 6 - 12 months. After opening, it is recommended to use it within 1 - 2 weeks; otherwise, the flux will lose its effectiveness, affecting the welding quality.
II. Key Factors Affecting the Shelf Life of Electronic Materials
(1) Storage Environment
1. Temperature: High temperature accelerates the chemical reactions and physical changes within the electronic materials. For example, high temperature will cause the electrolyte of aluminum electrolytic capacitors to evaporate faster, and the packaging materials of ICs may develop tiny cracks due to thermal expansion and contraction, allowing moisture and impurities to invade. Generally, the ideal storage temperature range for electronic materials is 20℃ - 25℃.
2. Humidity: High humidity is the enemy of electronic materials. Moist air causes oxidation of metal pins and moisture absorption of PCB boards, and even leads to internal short circuits of components. For components with high humidity sensitivity (MSL), such as some ICs, they must be stored in a low-humidity environment (usually with humidity below 20%RH), and the exposure time after opening must be strictly controlled.
3. Light and Gases: Intense light may cause the materials of some electronic materials to age. For example, plastic-encapsulated components may change color and become brittle; while corrosive gases in the air (such as sulfur dioxide, chlorine) will accelerate the corrosion of metal components, shortening the lifespan of electronic materials.
(2) Packaging Method
1. Vacuum Packaging: Vacuum packaging can effectively isolate air and moisture, significantly extending the shelf life of electronic materials. For humidity-sensitive ICs, vacuum packaging combined with desiccant and humidity indicator cards can extend the shelf life to 2 - 3 years.
2. Moisture-Resistant Bag Packaging: Moisture-resistant bag packaging is commonly used for ordinary electronic materials. Although the moisture-resistant effect is slightly inferior to vacuum packaging, it can still provide protection for a certain period of time. However, once the moisture-resistant bag is opened, the electronic materials need to be used as soon as possible; otherwise, the shelf life will be significantly shortened.
(3) Production Processes and Material Characteristics
1. Manufacturing Process: Advanced manufacturing processes can enhance the stability of electronic materials. For example, using lead-free soldering processes for components results in more stable performance over a long storage period compared to lead-containing processes, as lead is prone to chemical reactions under high temperature and high humidity conditions.
2. Material Quality: The quality of the raw materials used for electronic materials directly affects the shelf life. High-quality semiconductor materials, metal materials, and packaging materials with better anti-aging and anti-corrosion properties can ensure that components maintain good performance for a longer period.
III. Management and Control of Electronic Material Shelf Life
(1) Strict In-Storage Inspection
When purchasing electronic materials for storage, enterprises must carefully verify the production date, shelf life information, and check if the packaging is intact. For humidity-sensitive components, it is also necessary to check if the humidity indicator card is normal to ensure that the electronic materials in storage are in good condition.
(2) Optimizing Storage Environment
Establish a standard electronic material warehouse and equip it with temperature and humidity control systems, anti-static equipment, and ventilation facilities. Store different types of electronic materials in separate areas, such as placing humidity-sensitive components in low-humidity moisture-proof cabinets to ensure that the storage environment meets the requirements for all types of electronic materials.
(3) First-In-First-Out (FIFO) Management
During the production material requisition process, strictly follow the first-in-first-out principle, prioritizing the use of electronic materials with earlier storage dates to avoid expiration due to accumulation. Use an ERP system or warehouse management software to monitor the batch and storage date of electronic materials in real time to ensure the effective implementation of first-in-first-out.
(4) Regular Testing and Maintenance
Regularly conduct sampling tests on inventory electronic materials, especially those close to their shelf life. For those that fail the tests, promptly dispose of them for scrap or use them at a reduced level; For materials that are about to expire but still have value for use, their service life can be appropriately extended through re-packaging, drying treatment, etc.
The shelf life of electronic materials is a crucial aspect that electronic manufacturing enterprises must pay attention to. Understanding the characteristics of the shelf life of different electronic materials, grasping the factors affecting the shelf life, and adopting scientific and effective management measures can not only ensure product quality, reduce production risks caused by the failure of electronic materials, but also optimize inventory management, reduce material waste, and enhance the economic benefits and competitiveness of the enterprise. With the continuous development of electronic technology, the performance and shelf life management of electronic materials will also face new challenges and opportunities. Enterprises need to continuously monitor industry trends, improve management systems, and adapt to market demands.
