What are the differences between flexible circuit boards (FPC) and ordinary circuit boards?

1. Core substrate and physical properties are different

• Ordinary circuit board (rigid PCB): Uses rigid insulating material as the substrate, the most common type is FR-4 epoxy resin glass fiber board, which is hard and cannot be bent, has high mechanical strength, and can provide stable physical support for components.

• Flexible circuit board (FPC): Uses flexible insulating film as the substrate, the mainstream is polyimide (PI) or polyester film, which is lightweight and can be repeatedly bent (some can achieve 360° folding), and can adapt to complex spatial layouts.

2. Structural and form differences

• Ordinary circuit board: The structure is fixed, the number of layers is mostly single/double/multi-layer rigid substrate stacking, the thickness is usually above 0.2mm, the form once produced cannot be changed, and fixed installation space needs to be reserved.

• Flexible circuit board: The structure is more flexible, it can be designed as single/double/multi-layer flexible substrate, some will also combine with rigid areas (i.e., rigid-flex combined board), the thickness can be as thin as 0.05mm or less, and can fit curved surfaces, fold or bend wires in a narrow space.

3. Performance emphasis is different

• Ordinary circuit board: Focuses on stability and versatility, has strong insulation, heat resistance (conventional FR-4 can withstand about 130°C), and good current-carrying capacity, suitable for most scenarios without special requirements for shape, but has weak vibration and impact resistance.

• Flexible circuit board: Focuses on flexibility and adaptability, can withstand tens of thousands of bends (some industrial-grade FPC can exceed 100,000 times), has excellent vibration and impact resistance, but the current-carrying capacity is usually weaker than the same specification rigid PCB, some flexible substrates have lower temperature resistance (ordinary PI can withstand about 200°C, special treatment is required to improve it), and additional steps such as flexible substrate processing, cover film bonding, and reinforcing plate bonding are required during production, which increases the cost of raw materials (PI) and processing equipment, making mass production more difficult, and the unit price is generally 2-5 times that of the same specification rigid PCB.

4. Manufacturing processes and costs are different

• Ordinary circuit board: The process is mature and standardized, the production process is simple (such as substrate cutting, drilling, etching, etc.), the cost of raw materials (FR-4) is low, suitable for mass production, and the unit price is usually lower.

• Flexible circuit board: The process is more complex, additional steps such as flexible substrate processing, cover film bonding, and reinforcing plate bonding are required, the cost of raw materials (PI) and processing equipment is higher, mass production is more difficult, and the unit price is generally 2-5 times that of the same specification rigid PCB.

5. Application scenarios are different

• Ordinary circuit board: Widely used in fixed-shaped electronic devices, such as the main board of mobile phones (except for the flexible area of foldable screens), computer mainboards, TV circuit boards, industrial control equipment, etc., it is the "basic model" of the electronics industry.

• Flexible circuit board: Focuses on scenarios that require bending or space constraints, such as hinge lines of foldable screen phones, adhered circuits of smart watches/fitness trackers, narrow internal wiring of drones, curved circuits of car dashboards, etc., it is the "exclusive model for special scenarios".
