In the current era of accelerated technological product updates, the electronic waste such as discarded mobile phones, computers, circuit boards, etc., is not worthless "electronic garbage", but rather a "urban mine" containing various high-value precious metals. These metals, due to their unique physical and chemical properties, are crucial for the realization of the core functions of electronic devices, and their recovery value far exceeds that of ordinary mineral resources. Among them, precious metals such as palladium (Pd) and gold (Au) are the core values in the field of electronic waste recycling.
When it comes to the metal with the highest unit value in electronic waste, palladium (Pd) undoubtedly stands out. Its market price has long been higher than that of traditional precious metals such as gold and silver. The high value of palladium stems from its scarcity and special uses - it has excellent catalytic performance, conductivity, and corrosion resistance, and is widely used in the circuit boards, sensors, connectors, and other precision components of smartphones and computers, especially in critical scenarios such as high-frequency signal transmission and antioxidant contact points. Due to the small demand for palladium in electronic devices but extremely high precision requirements, and the scarcity of natural palladium resources, its unit weight value remains high, becoming the top precious metal "calculated by grams" in electronic waste.
However, from the perspective of actual recycling scenarios, gold (Au) is the metal with the highest comprehensive value in the electronic waste recycling industry. The reason why gold can become the "main force" in the recycling market is that its content in electronic waste is relatively stable and the recovery difficulty is low. Gold has excellent conductivity, ductility, and chemical stability, and is not prone to oxidation and corrosion, so it is widely used in the circuit board's line coating, chip pins, connector contacts, and other core parts. Compared with palladium, gold has a wider application range in various electronic devices and a higher total content that can reach the recycling threshold, and due to the mature extraction process, the actual recovery benefits are more advantageous, making gold the core recycling target for most electronic waste recycling enterprises.
In addition to palladium and gold, electronic waste also contains other high-value precious metals, ranked by unit value from high to low, are platinum (Pt), silver (Ag), etc. The properties of platinum are similar to those of palladium, also having excellent catalytic performance and stability, often used in the precision sensors and fuel cell components of high-end electronic devices, but its total content in electronic waste is lower than that of palladium, and its recovery value is slightly inferior. Silver, with good conductivity and cost-effectiveness, is widely used in circuit board wiring, electronic component soldering points, etc., and although its unit value is lower than gold, palladium, and platinum, its total content is higher, making it an important value source in electronic waste recycling.
It is worth noting that rhodium (Rh), as the "benchmark" of the precious metal family, has a unit value even higher than palladium, but it is difficult to become the mainstream in electronic waste recycling. The scarcity of rhodium far exceeds that of other precious metals, and it is only used in a few high-end precision electronic components (such as high-end sensors, aerospace-grade electronic devices), its content in ordinary electronic waste is extremely low, and due to the complex and costly extraction process, the actual recovery difficulty is extremely high, only being targeted for extraction in specific high-end electronic waste recycling projects.
