Gold Plating Waste Recycling and Processing Specifications and Resource Circulation Guidelines
Gold-plated waste, as a high-value recycled resource, includes electronic manufacturing scraps (gold-plated circuit boards, pins, connectors), gold-plated components from used electronic equipment (server chips, communication module contacts), industrial production waste (gold-plated molds, electroplating residue), etc. The recycling process must balance efficient resource extraction, environmental protection and harmless disposal, as well as compliance operations. The following are the standardized procedures and core requirements:
I. Classification and Pre-treatment of Gold Plating Waste
1. Precise classification and sorting: Classify according to the type of waste and gold plating characteristics to improve the recovery efficiency:
◦ Electronic type gold-plated waste: gold-plated circuit boards, chip pins, connectors, relay contacts, etc., need to remove the non-gold base materials (such as plastic casings, ordinary metal supports);
◦ Industrial type gold-plated waste: gold-plated molds, electroplating fixtures, used gold-plated containers, etc., remove surface oil stains, rust and other impurities;
◦ Liquid/powder type gold-plated waste: electroplating waste liquid, gold-plated powder, polishing residue, etc., collect in sealed containers to avoid leakage pollution.
2. Pre-treatment operations:
◦ Physical pre-treatment: Through cutting, crushing, grinding, etc., break down large pieces of waste into fine particles to increase the contact area with the extractant;
◦ Cleaning treatment: Use neutral cleaning agents to remove oil stains, dust on the surface of the waste, rinse with clean water and dry, avoiding impurities affecting the purity of gold extraction.
II. Main Gold Extraction Processes (Compliance and Environmental Protection)
1. Chemical Separation Method:
◦ Principle: Use environmentally friendly stripping agents (such as thiourea-sulfuric acid system), dissolve the gold plating layer at room temperature, retain the integrity of the substrate (such as copper, aluminum, etc.), avoid secondary waste;
◦ Advantages: Reaction is mild, energy consumption is low, the gold recovery rate can reach over 95%, the stripping agent can be recovered and recycled through distillation, reducing waste discharge.
2. Electrolytic Recovery Method:
◦ Principle: Use the gold-plated waste as the anode, place it in an electrolyte solution, and through electrolysis, deposit the gold ions on the cathode to achieve gold separation and extraction;
◦ Applicable scenarios: Suitable for high-purity gold-plated waste (such as gold-plated thickness ≥ 0.5 μm), the extracted gold purity can reach over 99.9%, requires wastewater treatment facilities.
3. Pyrometallurgical Method:
◦ Principle: Mix the gold-plated waste with a flux, melt it at a high temperature (1200-1500°C), gold and other metals form alloys, and through oxidation and refining, separate pure gold;
◦ Precautions: Need to be equipped with waste gas treatment equipment (such as desulfurization, dust removal devices), for gold-plated waste containing lead, mercury and other harmful substances, need to pre-treat them without harm before disposal.
III. Environmental and Harmless Disposal Requirements
1. Waste Liquid Treatment: During the extraction process, generated waste containing cyanide and heavy metal ions need to be treated through chemical neutralization, precipitation, filtration, etc., to ensure wastewater meets discharge standards (compliant with the "Sewage Comprehensive Discharge Standard"), and严禁direct discharge.
2. Waste Disposal: After extracting gold, the residue (such as copper, silver and other metal-containing waste) needs to be classified and collected, handed over to institutions with qualifications for further recovery of other precious metals or harmless disposal to avoid solid waste pollution.
3. Waste Gas Control: Waste gas generated during pyrometallurgical and chemical stripping processes (such as sulfur dioxide, acid mist), need to be purified through absorption towers, activated carbon adsorption, etc., to meet waste gas discharge standards before discharge.
IV. Core Compliance Points in the Recycling Process
• Recycling enterprises need to have the qualifications for recycled resource recovery and environmental protection licenses. For hazardous waste (such as cyanide-containing gold-plated waste), need to obtain hazardous waste treatment qualifications;
• Establish a complete recycling ledger, record the source, quantity, processing method, gold recovery rate, waste residue and liquid disposal direction of the waste, retain for at least 3 years for future reference;
The above are the standardized procedures and core requirements for the recycling of gold-plated waste.
• It is prohibited to use highly toxic chemicals such as cyanide for illegal extraction to avoid environmental pollution and safety accidents;
• When importing or transporting gold waste across regions, relevant approval procedures must be followed in accordance with regulations, and comply with the supervision requirements of customs and environmental protection departments.
V. Resource Recycling and Reuse
• The extracted pure gold can be directly used in the electronics manufacturing industry, jewelry processing, precision instrument production, etc., achieving resource recycling;
• During the recycling process, other metals separated (such as copper, silver, palladium) can be purified and reused as raw materials for recycling, increasing the comprehensive recycling value of waste materials;
• The plastics and common metal substrates stripped during pre-treatment are classified and disposed of according to corresponding recycling standards to avoid resource waste.
