"The Story of 'Wire Rebirth' on the Hong Kong Construction Site"
When the crane arm on the Causeway Bay construction site slowly lowered the last steel beam, Old Li, wearing a pair of rubber gloves, stepped over the scattered rubble, bent down, and picked up a section of the cut copper-core wire. The insulation layer had cracked under the sun and rain, revealing the dark yellow copper wire inside. Along with other discarded wires and cable ends, they were piled up in the corner of the construction site, like a heap of "forgotten steel vines".
"These are not garbage." Sister Chen, in charge of the environmental recycling at the construction site, was wearing a rubber glove and sorting the messy wires. "Every building in Hong Kong rises from the ground, behind it lies countless such 'resources' - a used wire, the copper core recovery rate can reach over 95%, and the plastic insulation layer can also be recycled and reprocessed." Her movements were quick, separating the thick cables and thin wires, and picking out the severely damaged wires. "Different specifications of wires require different handling methods. They must not be mixed together and wasted."
In the evening, the environmental recycling vehicle drove into the construction site. The workers moved the sorted used wires onto the vehicle, and the compartment was already padded with anti-seepage materials to prevent the insulation layer fragments from polluting the road surface. "These wires need to be transported to the environmental processing center in New Territories first. The first step is 'de-sheathing'." Sister Chen pointed to the label on the recycling vehicle and explained, "The processing center will use physical compression to separate the copper core and the plastic insulation layer. The entire process does not use chemical agents and will not produce harmful gases."
In the workshop of the processing center, the sorted wires were sent to special equipment. Amid the low humming of the machines, the copper core and the plastic insulation layer separated quickly. The fallen plastic insulation was compressed into regular blocks and sent to the plastic processing factory to be made into new building materials; while the shiny copper core was melted into copper ingots, which might become new wires, electrical parts, or even copper materials for construction in the future. "Look," said the workshop supervisor, picking up a sample of the recycled plastic-made floor tile, "this is the 'second life' of used wires. It not only reduces the pressure on landfill sites but also saves resources for mining new copper ore."
The used wires on the construction site were once a burden after the construction. Now, in Hong Kong's well-developed environmental recycling system, they start from the corner of the construction site, go through sorting, dismantling, and processing, and transform into recyclable resources. When new wires are laid into the newly built buildings, and facilities made of recycled plastic appear on the streets of the city, this "rebirth journey" starting from the construction site is quietly injecting strength into Hong Kong's green development - in each used wire, there lies the code to protect the city's environment.
